"Ketone bodies" are an energy source during starvation.
Simply said . . . Ketone bodies are produced as a "byproduct" when the body burns fat for energy. And this process happens during low food intake, dieting and starvation.
You see . . . In the liver, fat is converted into ketone bodies and released into the blood. These ketones can now cross the blood-brain barrier and are available as fuel for the cells of the central nervous system. This acts as a substitute for glucose (remember this is the sugar the body needs to survive).
Now . . . if you have diabetes . . . these ketones can trigger a dangerous condition called "ketoacidosis". This occurs when the body stores up too many ketones and the blood becomes too acidic (remember that's your pH level that is no longer in its neutral range). This now becomes a danger to the liver, kidneys and brain. We'll talk more about that in a moment.
Okay . . . so what about this "Keto" diet that everyone is trying?
The "Keto" diet is a very low-carb, high-fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins diet. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with high fats. This puts the body into a metabolic state called "ketosis".
Unfortunately . . . when this happens it can cause low blood pressure, kidney stones, constipation, nutrient deficiencies and an increased risk of heart disease. It can also cause eating disorders and is "not safe" for anyone with a condition involving the pancreas, liver, thyroid or gallbladder.
And the "Keto Pills" work just the same! They increase levels of ketones in the blood, without cutting the carbs . . . keto pills do this by involving a key ingredient medium-chain triglyceride such as coconut oil.
I'm not a personal fan of this kind of diet for many reasons. One being, this diet tells you to consume lots of dairy as one of its high fats. Dairy in itself holds lots of nutritional value. . . .
But . . . it's also one of the foods that feeds the "bad" bacteria that is wreaking havoc on the body in the first place and causing weight issues. So this now, becomes a double edge sword.
Yes, doing this diet may help you lose weight temporarily . . . But you have now just reset the body to an even higher amount of "bad" bacteria capable of causing illness, allergies and disease. And this is why it's so hard to maintain this kind of a diet or the weight the body has lost from depleting food.
Another issue with this diet as I stated above, is "Ketoacidosis". This can become a very dangerous condition. You see . . . obviously the majority of the people that are trying this diet and diet pill option, are overweight. And with being overweight, a very large number of these people also have prediabetes or diabetes, with many not even knowing it. And this kind of diet, can trigger a "Ketoacidosis" condition.
This is a serious diabetes complication where the body produces excess blood acids (ketones). And occurs when there isn't enough "insulin" in the body. This can become a life-threatening problem. It occurs when the body starts breaking down fat at a rate that is much too fast. And blood acidity can cause the parts of the brain that regulate breathing to become stimulated to produce faster and deeper breathing causing respiratory distress.
So this kind of diet is not for everyone . . . please be aware and "choose" wisely.
