"Lower Vagus Tone" - what's "that" all about?

So today, and this week . . . let's continue and talk about "Lower Vagus Tone".

Now . . . last week, we found out "just" how important this 10th cranial nerve called the "Vagus" nerve, really is to optimal health.

And among all the organs it helps function properly . . . (that's the list I gave you last week) . . .

One of the most important . . . is the "stimulation" of the "Migrating Motor Complex" . . .

You see . . . "IF" . . . this "Vagus nerve" is "NOT" functioning properly . . . this is now called . . . "Lower Vagus Tone" . . . or "Lower Vagal Tone"

And this "LACK" of action . . . has been associated with "chronic inflammation".

Now . . . as we know . . . part of the "immune system's" function is to send out "inflammation" to help the body "heal" after an injury . . . or an invasion to the body of bacteria or a virus . . .

And one of the "Vagus nerve's" duties . . . is to "RESET" the "immune system" and "SWITCH OFF" the production of protein that fuels "inflammation"

And "IF" . . . this function "ISN'T" working correctly. . . "inflammation" DOES'T get turned OFF . . . and we are left with "widespread" inflammation and "chronic pain"!!!

So it's "IMPAIRATIVE" . . . that our "Vagus Tone" is working correctly!!!

Okay . . . so back to MMC and the "Vagus Nerve" . . .

Now . . . as we have discovered . . . the "Vagus nerve" is what "connects" the body's digestive system to the "brain".

Thus, the "GUT/BRAIN CONNECTION"!

And it "supports" the breakdown of the food we consume . . . by releasing "saliva" to help this process of digestion move down to the esophagus . . . and then into the stomach.

The "Vagus nerve" also "triggers" the release of "digestive enzymes and bile" . . . which we know are necessary for food to reach the stomach . . . "small intestine" and finally the "large intestine" (colon).

And the most "important" part of the "Vagus nerve's" job in the digestive tract . . . is to "COORDINATE" intestinal "mobility" and the "Migrating Motor Complex" . . . so our food can MOVE down the digestive tract!!!

You see . . . "optimal" Vagal tone . . . is associated with proper "emotional regulation" . . . and greater overall wellbeing.

But . . . "IF" . . . we have a "poor" Vagal tone . . . chronic stress . . . anxiety . . . and related concerns . . . can now significantly "impact" the health of our "GUT" . . . leading to gastrointestinal problems like . . . bloating, constipation, diarrhea and SIBO.

So what are some of the warning signs that the "Vagus Nerve" IS NOT functioning properly???

Well . . . they would be . . .

Abdominal pain and bloating

Acid reflux

Changes to heart rate, blood pressure or blood sugar

Difficulty swallowing

Dizziness

Fainting

Hoarseness

Loss of gag reflex

Loss of voice

Or Wheezing

And as we spoke the other day . . . people that "graze" . . . or eat every few hours (even just picking at food or a snack . . .or drinking liquids that ARE NOT clear) . . . have a "Vagus nerve" and "Migrating Motor Complex" . . . that "AREN'T" functioning properly.

So tomorrow . . . we'll continue with ways to "stimulate" our "Vagus Nerve" AND correct our "Lower Vagal Tone"!
