"OMEGAs" . . . what are they all about????

Good morning, my Facebook family and friends . . .

I'm back . . . and I hope to find you "all" healthy, happy and safe . . .

So . . . this past week . . . I had a conversation with some very dear people to me . . . about this Western diet we love so much . . . and "OMEGA" fatty acids.

And "I" think . . . we as a society . . . just aren't getting it . . .

So let's better understand what "exactly" OMEGA fatty acids are all about . . . and what they do for our health!

Okay . . . so first up . . . what is an "fatty acid"???

Well . . . it's a "carboxylic acid" consisting of a "hydrocarbon chain" and a "terminal carboxyl group" . . . especially any of those occurring as "esters" in fats and oils"

So what does all that mean???

Well . . . in simple terms . . . "fatty acids" are the "building blocks" of the fat in our body . . . and in the food we eat.

You see . . . during digestion . . . the body "breaks down" fats into "fatty acids" . . . which in turn . . . get absorbed into our "blood".

And with this . . . "fatty acids" are usually joined together in groups of 3 . . . which are called "triglycerides".

And we've all hear about them before!!!

Okay . . . so now we need to ask . . . what makes a "fatty acid" . . . OMEGA???

Well . . . "omega" simply refers to "how many" carbons away from the end of this "fatty acid chain" . . . a double carbon is located.

Like . . . Omega-3 would be 3 carbons away from the end of this chain . . . Omega-6 would be 6 carbons . . . or Omega-9 would be 9

And why is this important???

Well . . . these Omega's actually determine how "healthy" we are.

You see . . . this Western diet we all consume . . . is "deficient" in the "short" chain "Omega-3 fatty acid"

Most Americans eat way more Omega-6 fats . . . then Omega-3 fats.

And unfortunately . . . this Western diet consists of a "high" intake of pre-packaged foods, refined grains, red meat, processed meat, high-sugar drinks, candy and sweets, fried foods, industrially produced animal products, butter and other high-fat dairy products, eggs, potatoes and corn.

Which are all Omega-6 fatty acids

So tomorrow . . . let's break it down a little more . . . to better understand.
