The "Worst" Food for "Oral Health"

Okay . . . so what are the "worst" foods for "oral health" and ultimately our "overall" wellness???

Well . . . at the top of the list . . .

"Sugar" . . . but we all knew that . . . right?

And this is ANY sugar . . . "natural" or "synthetic" . . .

Why??? Because they can all cause tooth decay . . .

You see . . . "sugar" turns the mouth into an "acidic" environment.

And this done too often . . . can dissolve tooth enamel.

And guess what???

After eating any kind of "sugar" . . . this "acidic environment" lasts for about 2 hours in the mouth. So if you have something "sugary" every couple of hours and don't brush your teeth in between . . . this "acidic environment" never goes away . . . which leaves us, our teeth and our health in a world of hurt.

Now . . . right along with "sugar" is "soft drinks".

But what about "sugar-free" you ask???

Well . . . even "sugar-free" soft drinks contain damaging "acid" for the mouth.

Next up . . . "dried fruits" like apricots, raisins and pineapples.

And now I'm sure you're thinking . . . WHAT . . . FRUIT????

Yes . . . fruit has "natural" sugars . . . and "dried" fruit . . . have a really "high" concentrated "sugar" that "sticks" to our teeth.

Okay . . . so what other foods are on the list of the most damaging to our mouth and teeth???

Well . . . that would be . . . "pickles" for one.

Why???

Because the "vinegar" in "pickles" . . . is very "acidic".

And how about "wine"???

Well . . . it doesn't matter if it's white or red . . . because they both contain "erosive acid" which softens enamel.

And to make matters worse . . . "wine" contains compounds called "tannins" which can "dry" the mouth out and "stain" the teeth.

Now . . . we've all heard about "citrus fruits" being "acidic" and "wearing down" tooth enamel . . . but what about "pasta sauce"???

Well . . . even though tomatoes are very healthy . . . they're also very "acidic" to the mouth and our teeth.

Now . . . if you think about the foods we've just spoken of . . . they all make sense.

So what about one of the most favorite snacks of this Western diet . . . "crackers"???

Well . . . "crackers" are a "refined" carbohydrate and these carbs promote "inflammation" in the body . . . with "periodontitis" and "gingivitis" being at the top of the list.

So tomorrow . . . let's talk about what foods "promote" a healthy mouth and teeth.
