So, we left off yesterday talking about the connection between "bile salts" and "estrogen" . . .
So, today . . . let's go one step further . . . and connect "osteoporosis".
You see . . . "bile salts" . . . play a role in "bone metabolism" and can contribute to the development of "osteoporosis"!
And this is done by "influencing " the activity of "osteoblasts" (bone-building cells) . . . and "osteoclasts" (bone-resorbing cells).
And any "liver" condition . . . like being overworked . . . liver disease . . . OR . . . lack of a "gallbladder" . . . where "bile flow" is IMPAIRED . . . can cause an "increased" risk of "osteoporosis".
So, let's dig even deeper . . .
Now . . . our "bone marrow" plays a significant role in "osteoporosis" . . . by influencing "bone density" through its "fat" content.
Meaning . . . "increased" bone marrow "FAT" . . . is associated with "decreased" bone mineral density . . .
Got it???
"High" levels of "marrow fat" . . . are linked to a greater risk of "osteoporosis".
And "bile salts" can influence the amount of "fat stored" within bone marrow . . . which can impact "bone health" by regulating the balance between "bone-forming cells" and "fat-storing cells" . . .
So, in a nutshell my friends . . .
An "imbalance" in "bile salt" levels . . . can lead to changes in "marrow fat" . . . which can cause "osteoporosis"!
So, how do we get this "increase" of "fat" in our "bones" you ask???
Well . . . "high" levels of "bone marrow fat" . . . also known as "bone marrow adipose tissue" (BMAT) . . . can be caused by . . .
Starvation and Anorexia nervosa . . . due to low Leptin hormone levels and increased Ghrelin hormone levels
Aging . . . bone marrow fat levels normally increase with age
Medications . . . like Glucocorticoids and Thiazolidinediones (TZDs)
Prolonged bed rest . . .
Diabetes . . . type 1
Cushing's disease . . .
Estrogen deficiency . . .
Bone metastasis . . . from breast or prostate cancer
And . . . this Western diet we all love so much . . .
Yes . . . even this Western diet . . . high in saturated fat and processed foods . . . can contribute to an increase in "bone marrow fat"!!!
So, how do we make sure our "bone marrow fat" is at a healthy level to prevent "osteoporosis"???
Well . . . regular exercise is one of the best ways.
We would also want to "avoid" foods like . . .
Caffeine - due to it interfering with "calcium absorption
Alcohol - due to is decreasing "bone density" and increasing the risk of fractures
Carbonated Beverages - sodas and other carbonated drinks contain "phosphoric acid", which can "decrease" calcium absorption
And eating an "anti-inflammatory" diet . . . high in Omega 3 fatty acids!!!
You see . . . Omega 3s "reduce" the amount of "fat" in bone marrow.
Omega 3s can also "improve" the metabolism of bone marrow stem cells . . . which can lead to a better environment for bone formation.
So, next week . . . let's connect the "DOTS" and add to this new information . . . MENOPAUSE.
Have a great weekend my friends . . .
