So, we now know . . . to STOP our "acid reflux" and digestive issues . . .
"ANTACIDS" and "PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS" . . .
Are NOT the answer . . .
So . . . what is???
Well . . . that would be . . . "HEALING" our LES (lower esophageal sphincter) . . . by KILLING the bacteria overgrowth that started this ball rolling in the first place.
And what "bad" bacteria was that???
Well . . . that would be the bacteria called . . . "H. pylori".
Now . . . we would also have to do things for a time such as . . .
Avoiding trigger foods like . . . fatty, spicy, acidic or caffeinated beverages
Elevating the head of your bed (use a wedge pillow) to help prevent stomach acid from flowing back up while sleeping
Avoiding lying down immediately after eating . . . wait at least 2-3 hours before lying down
Losing weight if overweight or obese to take the pressure off the LES
Quit smoking because this weakens the LES
Eliminate alcohol intake . . . again this relaxes the LES
and Eating smaller meals to reduce pressure on the LES
Now . . . the healing process of the LES . . . may take 6 to 8 weeks . . . but, it "IS" doable!
Okay . . . so, again . . . as with sooooooo many other health issues we have in today's world . . .
There isn't a lot of research that's been done on the direct effect of the bacteria called . . . "H. pylori" on the "lower esophageal sphincter (LES)
So, let's do our own . . . and "connect" the dots . . .
"H. pylori . . . is a bacteria that is typically "transmitted" through PERSON-to-PERSON contact . . .
Meaning through . . .
Saliva . . . kissing or sharing utensils with an infected person
Feces . . . contaminated food or water
Stomach content . . . vomiting or regurgitation.
Animal contact . . . infected animals like dogs and cats
Environmental factors . . . like contaminated soil or water
And this bacteria called "H. pylori" . . . can cause stomach issues like . . . gastritis, ulcers, stomach cancer . . . and even . . .
"Hiatal hernias" . . .
You see . . . a H. pylori infection can cause "inflammation" in the stomach lining . . . which can "weaken" the muscles .
The Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that people with H. pylori infection were MORE likely to have a "hiatal hernia".
And that . . . treating the H. pylori infection with antibiotics . . . improved symptoms of the "hiatal hernia".
Now . . . as I said the other day . . . an H. pylori infection in the stomach causes "inflammation" in the stomach "lining" . . . which can weaken the muscles that support the "LOWER ESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER" (LES).
Which as we now know . . . is the reason we have stomach acid that FLOWS BACK into the ESOPHAGUS!!!
So, moral to this story . . .
"IF" . . . you have "acid reflux" . . . DON'T LIVE ON . . . ANTACIDS . . . or . . . PROTON PUMPS INHIBITORS . . .
Get tested for "H. pylori" . . . the REAL cause to our discomfort!!!
