Seeing the "Northern Lights" . . . what?

So, this week . . . let's continue to discover the "possibilities" . . .
Now . . . when I was a kid . . . we learned in school that the "Northern Lights" were only seen at certain "latitudes" on earth . . .
But . . . we "just" saw them here in Connecticut and as far south as Florida a week or so ago.
So, what's up with that???
Well . . . you know me . . . I just had to research this one to figure it out . . .
Okay . . . so, let's go back to the "history books" for a moment . . .
The "Northern Lights" were discovered by a British astronomer named Richard Carrington in 1859 . . . who linked the "Aurora Borealis" with the sun.
And then in the early 1900s . . . Norwegian scientist Kristian Birkeland . . . first "explained" what causes the "Northern Lights" . . . with Benjamin Franklin also having a theory.
So, what was it all about???
Well . . . "Auroras" occur when these charged particles launched along Earth's "magnetic field" . . . "collide" with gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere.
And those "collisions" produce "tiny flashes" that fill the sky with colorful light.
Okay . . . so, I get that . . .
And . . . Alaska and Iceland being the "only" ideal positions to see this "aurora borealis" or "Northern Lights". . . clearly.
Now . . . it was recently forecast that Washington state, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin . . . would possibly be able to view the "aurora" also.
With the best months being between August 21 and April 21 . . . which is being called the "Aurora Season"!!!
And the odds of seeing the Northern Lights in Alaska are about 90% in this time frame.
But . . . "why" . . . and "how" . . . did we see them a week or so ago . . . as far south as Florida???
Well . . . tomorrow, let's figure that out . . .
