"Stomach Acid's" Journey . . .

Okay . . . so, yesterday we spoke about "what" stomach acid does for our digestion . . . and that . . . it's NOT the enemy . . . "IF" . . . functioning properly!

We also ended yesterday . . . learning that the pH balance of the stomach . . . needs to be much more "acidic" than the rest of the body to do its job correctly . . .

This "acidity" . . . is essential for the digestion of food . . . the activation of digestive enzymes . . . and protecting us from bad bacteria and pathogens that may have been on or in our food.

So . . . the key to "optimal" health . . . with NOOOOOOO stomach upset, heartburn, bloating, belching, acid reflux or gastric issues . . .

Or . . . the H. pylori . . . we spoke of last week . . . that causes "Gastritis" . . .

Is KEEPING the pH level of our "hydrochloric acid" (HCl) . . . in the healthy range of 1.5 to 3.5 on the pH balance scale we spoke of yesterday.

Now . . . when the stomach is "empty" . . . this "acid" level is normally between 1.5 and 2.0 . . . the bottom part of this range.

But . . . when we "eat" . . . after a meal . . this pH can INCREASE between 3 to 7 . . . WAY ABOVE THE NORMAL . . . depending on what food we just ate.

And the reason is this . . . the "food" we eat . . . can "buffer" the acid in the stomach.

Which can cause . . .

Acid reflux

Heartburn

Belching

and Indigestion

And what foods can cause this "increase" you ask???

Well . . . basically . . . everything we love in this Western diet . . . like . . .

High-fat foods

Fried foods

Acidic fruits like citrus and tomatoes

Spicy foods

Carbonated drinks

Chocolate

Caffeine

and Alcohol

Oh man . . .

We're in trouble now my friends . . .

And even "IF" . . . you don't feel the symptoms of this "increase" in "acidic" level . . .

Meaning . . . you DON'T have acid reflux, heartburn or indigestion . . .

It's STILL effecting us . . . and is called . . . the "silent killer of reflux".

So . . . how do "ANTACIDS" fit into this picture???

Well . . . tomorrow . . . we'll talk about that.
