"Dehumanization" - what's it all about?

ree

So, yesterday . . . we spoke about how easily it seems in today's world for "humans" to become "dehumanized".

So, how did we get to this point of all this "ANGER" and "HATRED" in the world and our lives today???

How did our relationship with others . . . become so "dehumanized"???

Well, "modern" relationships have become a risk due to a combination of . . . historical power structures . . . phycological biases . . . and recent societal shifts . . .

And this . . . is due to the rise of technology and social media.

You see . . . all the new technology . . . and all the social media in today's world . . . has made the "value" of being a human . . . with all it "humanity" (love, compassion and creativity) . . . LESS valuable.

And with this . . . it's become "normal" to see others . . . as LESS than human . . . reducing empathy and making it easier to justify . . . mistreatment.

A good example would be . . .

Psychological biases:

You know . . . the "US" versus "THEM mentality.

It's all to common for people to "derive" part of their identity from their social group.

And with this . . . it can lead to an "in-group/out-group" dynamic . . . where it's easier to "dehumanize" those perceived as different or outside the group to maintain cohesion.

Another good example would be . . .

Moral disengagement:

This is where people "talk" themselves into accepting otherwise "unethical behavior" by redefining their targets as LESS than human.

So . . . what part does "technology" and "society" play in this upset of "humanity"???

Well . . . for one . . . the rise of social media . . .

In today's world . . . online platforms create an environment ripe for "dehumanization" . . . which lead to hate speech, cyberbullying . . . and a reduction of people to simplistic stereotypes!!!

And with this . . . social media is designed to "maximize" engagement.

Meaning . . . often this programing shows users content that TRIGGERS outrage or reinforces pre-existing biases.

This in turn . . . can breed a conflict between empathy and antipathy.

You see . . . technology of today . . . creates a "human-less" experience by reducing real people to curated profiles with likes and comments.

NO ONE TALKS TO EACH OTHER ANYMORE . . .

Therefore . . . conversation (compassion, love, empathy) is NO LONGER REAL!!!!

We've been reduced to just . . . symbols!!!!

So, tomorrow . . . let's continue
