Good morning my friends . . .
Spring is finally here . . . the weather is beautiful . . . the flowers are blooming . . .
And . . . the "mosquitos" are a comin' . . .
So, the question for today is this . . . DO MOSQUITOS LOVE YOU???
Well . . . "IF" you answered YES to that question . . .
I know the reason why!!!!
And therefore . . . you WON'T have to spend the summer running inside . . .
So first, what exactly is a "mosquito"???
Well . . . they're a group of about 3500 species of small insects . . . that are "flies".
And believe it or not . . . Mosquitos are just . . . Spanish for "LITTLE FLY".
Awwww sounds so cute . . . RIGHT . . . YA . . . tell your itchy welts that!!!!
And these little buggers use many methods to locate us like . . .
The "carbon dioxide" . . . that humans and animal "exhale" when they breathe.
They also use their receptors . . . and vision . . . to pick up on other cues like our body heat, perspiration and skin odor.
Now . . . both male and females feed "mainly" on fruit and plant nectar . . .
AND . . . it's "ONLY" the FEMALE mosquitoes that bit and feed off the blood of humans or warm-blooded animals.
You see . . . the FEMALE needs the "protein" in our blood to help her eggs develop.
Now . . . in a 3 week period of time . . . she may lay up to 5 "clutches" of more than 100 eggs in each clutch.
And after the female has laid 1 clutch of eggs . . . she will rest for 2 or 3 days . . . and then go back to find more blood for the next "clutch".
And with this . . . a Mosquito can bit multiple times . . . and can drink 3 times her weight in blood.
So, that adds up to several bites from the same mosquito a night.
And female mosquitoes searching for a meal of blood . . . detect people partly by using a special "receptor" to home in on our sweat.
But . . . they will first sense exhaled carbon dioxide from a distance that can be more than 30 feet.
So, the question still remains . . .
Why do mosquitoes bite some people more than others???
Well, tomorrow we'll talk about that
