Good morning my friends . . .
I hope you had a safe and healthy weekend!!!
So, with the world in "chronic" PAIN these days . . .
Let's take this week and talk about all those "PAIN RELIEVERS" we consume . . .
With many . . . on a DAILY BASIS . . .
So, what's it all about???
Well . . . let's start at the beginning . . . and understand "WHY" we're in "pain" in the first place . . .
WHAT IS "PAIN"???
Well . . . simply put . . . "pain" is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with "actual" . . . or . . . "potential" tissue damage!
And the "types" of pain we can feel would be . . .
ACUTE - short-lived pain . . . typically caused by tissue injury
CHRONIC - persistent pain lasting for more than 3 months
NOCICEPTIVE - pain arising from tissue damage
NEUROPATHIC - pain caused by damage or dysfunction of the nervous system
IDIOPATHIC - pain without a clear underlying medical cause
And "PAIN" . . . is actually an ESSENTIAL protective mechanism . . . that alerts us to potential harm.
You see . . . "PAIN" . . . alerts us to harm through a 4 stage process . . .
TRANSDUCTION - where specialized nerve ending called . . . "nociceptors" . . . detect damages to an area of the body and "convert" them into "electrical signals". And with this . . we may feel "extreme temperature" . . . "intense pressure" . . . or a "chemical signaling" . . . released from the injured cells.
TRANSMISSION - where these "electrical signals" travel along nerves to the spinal cord and then to the brain.
MODULATION - where the spinal cord can amplify or dampen the "electrical signal" . . . before they get to the brain.
PERCEPTION - where the brain interprets these "electrical signals" . . . creating the conscious experience of pain . . . and initiating a protective response from the body.
So, tomorrow . . . let's discover if "PAIN RELIEVERS" . . . HELP US . . . OR HURT US!!!
