What the "MECHANICS" of the "Respiratory" System are telling us!

So, today . . . let's talk about our "respiratory system" . . . and WHAT message . . . it could be sending to us for HELP!!!

Okay . . . so, what are the "mechanics" of this system you ask???

Well . . . the "respiratory system" involves "inspiration" (breathing in) . . . and "expiration" (breathing out). And these are driven by "pressure" differences caused by the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.

With "intercostal muscles" being . . . the fibers 'between the "ribs" that keep them in place.

Now . . . during "inspiration" . . . muscles contract to expand the chest cavity . . . decreasing pressure inside the lungs to draw air in.

During "expiration" . . . muscles relax . . .

And with this . . . the cavity volume decreases . . . and air is pushed out as the pressure inside the lungs increases.

But . . . what "signs" would be want to look for . . . "IF" . . . this system has an internal problem???

Well . . . we would look for . . .

Shortness of breath or feeling like you cant' get enough air

Rapid or hyperventilating breathing

Wheezing or noise breathing

Difficulty speaking in full sentences due to shortness of breath

A bluish or grayish color to the skin, lips or fingernails

Pale or cool, clammy skin

The muscles between the ribs (intercoastal muscles) or in the neck . . . pulling inward with each breath

Nostrils widening with each breath

Excessive sweating

Persistent cough . . . with or without . . . blood or mucus

Confusion, sleepiness or restlessness

Headaches

Chest pains

or irregular heartbeat

These are all "warning" signs that the body is in distress!!!

And tomorrow . . . we'll finish this topic of "LISTENING TO YOUR BODY'S MECHANICS" with the "skeletal" system.
