So, yesterday . . . we discovered that 75% of the U.S. population is "DEHYDRATE" . . . and we don't even know it!!!
We also learned that the same part of the "brain" determines and signals the body whether we're REALLY hungry . . . or just thirsty!!!
Now . . . according to a recent report from Mintel, Snacking Motivations and Attitudes U.S. . . . they state . . .
"Nearly all Americans (94%) snack at least once a day . . . and with this . . . snacking has become the "new American pastime" . . . especially since the pandemic started."
SO HOW OFTEN DO "YOU" SNACK???
Well . . . the truth is . . . most people confuse "thirst" with "hunger" . . . and therefore . . . clinical studies have shown that people "mistake" these signs and signals . . .
And therefore . . . "WE SNACK ALL THE TIME"!!!
So, let me ask you this question . . . do you have dry skin????
Well . . . this is just one of the many signs that you're dehydrated and "thirsty".
Some other symptoms would be . . .
Headaches
Fatigue
Lightheadedness
And difficulty concentrating
Okay . . . so, we've spoken about the "LIMBIC SYSTEM" in the brain many times before.
And we've spoken about its important functions of "decision making", memory, mood and "estrogen receptors" that determine "IF" we're going to have a tough or easy menopause.
But . . . does it "also" affect our "THIRST" vs "HUNGER" mode too???
Well . . . the answer to that would be "YES"!!!
You see . . . there are 4 main structures of the "Limbic system" in the brain.
The "Amygdala" . . . associated with emotions like fear
The "Hippocampus" . . . memory formation
The "Cingulate gyrus" . . . emotional processing
And the "Hypothalamus" . . . which is the structure that . . .
Help us sleep, manage mood, controls sexual arousal, regulates blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and motivation . . .
And yes . . . even our hunger and thirst!!!
So, it's the "hypothalamus" structure . . . of the "limbic system" in the brain that detects "dehydration" and "controls" our "thirst".
And some of the symptoms "IF" this part of the "brain" is "NOT" functioning properly would be "pain" in the . . .
Front
Back
Side
or all over the head
Now . . . this "hypothalamus" structure also . . . determines if we're "hungry"
And it works closely with the hormones called . . .
Ghrelin . . . which stimulates hunger . . . when the stomach is empty . . . the stomach releases this hormone which signals "hypothalamus' to "trigger" the feeling of "hunger".
And the hormone called Leptin . . . which signals fullness and fasting, and regulates our appetite accordingly . . . so once we've eaten . . . the body releases this hormone which signals the "hypothalamus" to "suppress" hunger and promote the feeling of fullness.
So, tomorrow, let's talk about how this important part of the brain can "malfunction"
